Im a painter living in Columbus Ohio. My work has become ever more centered on the idea of ambiguity and mystery. The color black and its obvious associations with darkness and night, is something I use frequently in my work. I am interested in the fear of darkness and its associations with the unknown. Darkness sometimes makes us fear places we are otherwise unafraid of when lighted. This makes blackness an ideal place for hiding things from the viewers of my paintings. I often use large areas of black on my canvases in conjunction with areas of light colors simulating artificial light. I think artificial lighting is a hallmark of human technological advances and our desire to overcome nature. In many of my paintings this illumination battles the blackness while also, especially in my landscapes, representing the presence of human activity. I try to hint at forms and shapes in the black while not letting the viewer know exactly what they are looking at. I want the viewer to make their own interpretation of what they are seeing. Each viewer will see something different based on his or her own personality and experience.
